Description:
This workshop introduces the concept of estrangement and explores the complex interplay between estrangement, grief, and unresolved relational dynamics in families. Using two case studies, participants will examine therapeutic strategies for addressing unfinished business and facilitating healing in clients grappling with estranged family relationships. This session emphasizes practical tools, including narrative exercises, timeline mapping, and frameworks for expressing regrets, resentments, and gratitude, to help clients process their emotions and restore a sense of peace.

Enhance clinicians' understanding of estrangement as a complicating factor in grief and family dynamics.
Provide practical interventions for addressing unresolved emotional issues stemming from estranged relationships.
Equip participants with tools to help clients process unfinished business, fostering emotional clarity and healing.
Promote the use of narrative and timeline techniques to help clients acknowledge complex emotions and balance boundaries with compassion.

Define estrangement and identify its impact on grief and relational dynamics.
Recognize common themes in unresolved grief, including regrets, resentments, and unexpressed gratitude.
Apply timeline mapping techniques to help clients identify and process key relational events and patterns.
Use structured frameworks to guide clients in expressing complex emotions related to estranged relationships.
Implement narrative exercises, such as letter-writing and acknowledgment statements, to promote emotional release and healing.
Develop personalized approaches for clients navigating estrangement, adapting interventions to diverse relational contexts and therapeutic goals.

About the Presenter
Debi Jenkins Frankle, LMFT, is a grief-informed psychotherapist with over 30 years of clinical experience supporting individuals, couples, and families through a wide range of losses and life transitions, both sudden and anticipated. In addition to teaching, training, and consulting with therapists on grief and loss, Debi dedicates half of her practice to providing direct care to clients. Throughout her career, she has guided thousands of grievers on their unique journeys toward healing and growth. Debi also serves as a professor at Pepperdine University Graduate School.
