What Happens When Someone I Love Has Cancer?
Explain the Science of Cancer and How a Loved One's Diagnosis and Treatment Affects a Kid's Day-To-day Life
by Sara Olsher
Sara Olsher has written a series of books that are Mighty and Bright which is the name of her company. This book caught my eye and I so wish I had this several years ago when I was working with 2 girls (ages 5 and 8- the perfect age for this book) whose mom had cancer.
Sara was diagnosed with cancer when she was 34 and had to explain what cancer was to her own daughter. Her book is clever, direct, interesting, engaging and hopeful.
I love that her books are structured with 3 important concepts:
EXPLAIN HARD THINGS : Our books introduce hard topics + how they affect a kid's day-to-day.
SHOW THEM WHAT TO EXPECT : Use a visual calendar to take the abstract + make it concrete.
GIVE CLARITY : Organize their thoughts, relieving their worry + answering their questions.
Please go check out this book which is on amazon.
